Apple WWDC08 Report Day4

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

This is almost last day since I’m leaving tomorrow noon. We have more advanced sessions today, such as Mastering Interface Builder session which should be continued from introduction one. I scheduled my Lab session afternoon around 4:30 pm and this should wrap up our project deployment.

Interesting thing is, I saw a couple of underground iPhone advertise company’s activities. There are a couple of people distributing flayer around entrance and I saw a pile of flayers in bathroom.

Another interesting thing is, I found a Japanese staff working at lab to support Japanese visitors. He told me there are more than 300 Japanese visitors. It seems that Japanese and Chinese people had their own reception on the first day. Shoooot, I was not invited!

The lab session was just talking about what’s available in iTunes Connections web login screen. One thing, I though that I can setup my own price, but actually I can not. Apple setup tier for pricing. That’s bad news for us. After this session, I have clear idea of distributing our app.

WWDC08 Bash will start in half hour, it’s beer time!

Attended Sessions:

  • Mastering Interface Builder
    • Clear explanation about File’s Owner,Fast Responder, and so on. Very good session in this morning.
  • Debugging and Profiling Your iPhone Application
    • Similar to other session to demonstrate Instrument profiler. Apple build beautiful app even if it’s debugger or profiler tool
  • Lunchtime Speaker: Physiology and Fossil
    • Generating T-Rex 3D model
    • Genetic Algorithm
  • Mastering iPhone View Controllers
  • Optimizing Performance in iPhone Applications
  • App Store - Getting Started Session
  • iPhone Device APIs: Location, Accelerometer and Camera

Apple WWDC08 Report Day3

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Here is another religious meeting, day 3, just started. Before starting this report, I would like to mention about my extra expense for my butt

brookstone nap form

which cost me around $40 and Father’s day discount campaign did not really help my budget plan at Brookstone. I spend 30 minutes to try massage chair.

Today, there is one interesting session from Pixer around noon. This might be something about developing software in the company. I’m kind a tired of just taking follow-up notes of each lecture and taking picture in dark conference over people’s heads, I’ll try to drop by lab session s which should be one-by-one.

Attended Session:

  • iPhone Application User Interface Design
    • This was really useless session something we could download from iTune or Software Engineering 101. Thank you for advertising AOL products.
  • Controls, Views, and Animation on iPhone
    • Basic demo of control and fade out and fade in
    • Orientation and Rotation
  • Lunch Time Speaker from Pixer
  • Internationalizing Your Software
  • Understanding the Xcode Project Management and Build System
    • I decided to choose this session rather than going to mult-touch because I had heard time to understand how to integrate OpenGL ES and xml framework for iPhone app before the template is coming. I did touch event handling in a couple of applications so it’s familiar to me.
  • Preparing and Delivering Video for iPhone, Safari, and Apple TV

Today’s Food and some other pictures:

Apple WWDC08 Report Day2

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Day2 started. I arrived there around 8 am before session starts. Thank you for free food and Odawalla drinks which I usually do not purchase because of overpriced healthy drinks. I will list a couple of sessions that I attended here.

iPhone Application Development Fundamentals

Basic things that we’ve already covered so far. The speaker insists to grab right idea about MVC design pattern. He also guided additional sessions to connected with this, such as Understanding ControllerView and TableView lectures. Some demo about Interface Builder to stick action and outlet. I like the concept that he explained, “Controllers are like glue to stick them together”.

Introduction to the iPhone Development Tools

  • Usage of debugger
  • Interface Builder Demo
  • Performance Analysis
    • Memory Leak
      1. Start Performance Monitor->Leak
      2. If you see Leaking, click the spike
      3. see stack dump
  • Shark - advanced performance monitor

Understanding iPhone View Controllers

  • UIViewController
  • UITabBarController
  • Rotation

Apple WWDC08 Report Day1

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

apple wwdc08 logo

In the morning, we had Setve Job’s Keynote session, and he announced to release 3G iPhone on 7/11 all over the world. After some break in afternoon, we had an lecture, “introduction to iPhone development” .

line of geek

This is pretty much something what they covered so far on developer.apple.com/iphone; however, it’s helpful to catch up some tips & tricks too. I also drop by a session to understand basic usage of development tools. Another session was interesting about OS architecture. The speaker introduced framework it’s called Grand Central, which make developer easier to create multi-core compatible programs, and the model is similar to packet routing in networking rather than parallel computing model.

introduction to iPhone Development

“Welcome Reception” started around 6:30pm. There are a bunch of fine wine selections, such as Coppola and of course Beers. I took some cheese platters and vegitables to celebrate remarkable first day.

reception time

It seems that most of people joined this conference for the first time. That indicates developers are looking for solutions in this new iPhone market which we are also expecting in our future.
